Calling On the Name of the Lord Take 3

To build upon the foundation I laid in the first two posts on this theme (here) and (here), in this post, I’m inviting you to see how little use you can make of your mouth and still call on the name of the Lord and touch Him in a real and life-giving way.

By now, from the teaching of the first post, you should have some experience encountering the Lord in reality in your regenerated human spirit simply by calling upon His name. And, from the teaching of the second post, you should have some experience fellowshipping with Him by quietly calling His name.

Now, take this practice to another level and see how little you can use your mouth and call His name and still touch Him in a real and enriching way within your spirit. First, get in a quiet place, wherever your have your devotional time with Him, or upon your pillow, or, say, when you’re in the shower. Then, with your mouth open, see if you can say, “Lord Jesus,” without moving your lips.

Experiment with that for a while. If you feel that is working for you, you can take the next step. On the other hand, if this is not yet working for you, don’t stress. Give it a break and go back to the first two foundational practices, and try to work them into your day for another week or two in a calm and relaxed way. Then if you feel ready to come back to this exercise, do so.

But if you find this third exercise is adding to your enjoyment of your experience with the Lord, then try part b: see how little you can use your tongue when you call on the Lord’s name, “Lord Jesus.”

Remember, it's not just about what might be considered the technical aspects of these exercises; rather, it's about getting comfortable with the technical aspects, and then flowing from them straight into the loving arms of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Experiment with these practices for a while. I believe the Lord will honor this approach and introduce you to a new level of subtle awareness of His presence as you continue.

My own experience has been that, the less sound I make and the less physical effort of my body that I make, the easier it is for me to discern His presence.

Remember, the risen Lord is living inside you. You don’t have to yell. In time, you might just discover that He is closer to you than you are to you.

May the Lord bless this exercise and reveal Himself to you in a new way.
